The White House

DAILY GUIDANCE AND PRESS SCHEDULE FOR
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2021  
In the morning, the President and the Vice President will receive the President’s Daily Brief in the Oval Office. This meeting will be closed press.

In the afternoon, the President will meet virtually with a group of Black essential workers to thank them for their critical roles during the pandemic; Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice will moderate the event. This event will be pooled press and streamed on WhiteHouse.gov.
 
Then, the President will participate in his first bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada in the Roosevelt Room. The Vice President will also attend. The President and his Cabinet will also meet virtually with Canada’s Ministers on a range of bilateral and global issues. This meeting will have a pool spray at the top.

After, the President and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will give statements on their bilateral meeting in the East Room. This event will be pooled press.

Daily Guidance for Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen

Secretary Yellen will join President Biden, Vice President Harris, and members of the U.S. Cabinet at a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada and Canada’s Ministers to discuss a range of bilateral and global issues. The meeting will be closed press.

The U.S. Senate

10a ET Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell testifies before the Senate Banking Committee.

It is reported that the Senate parliamentarian may rule as soon as Tuesday on whether a nationwide increase in the minimum wage to $15 an hour is allowed under the reconciliation process rules. Should it be ruled out the Senate can override the parliamenatian, unlikely since that would take 60 votes.

Xavier Becerra, Biden’s nominee to be HHS secretary testifies before the HELP Committee on Tuesday and the Finance Committee on Wednesday

The Senate is also expected to confirm Tom Vilsack as Agriculture secretary on Tuesday.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Tuesday hears testimony on the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Witnesses include the chief of the DC Police Department, the former chief of Capitol police, the former House sergeant at arms and the former Senate sergeant at arms. (The House does its Capitol attack hearing Thursday.

CIA Director nominee William Burns will testify Wednesday morning at his Senate Intel Cmte confirmation hearing, chaired by Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as Vice Chair.

The U.S. House   The House is finishing work on the $1.9-trillion Covid relief package in order to pass it be week’s end. Republicans meanwhile are pushing their alternative version.
