Germany’s Manufacturing Orders Rose 3.0% M/M in March, Beating Expectations

ZURICH (MaceNews) – Manufacturing orders in Germany increased 3.0% in March over February and were up 27.8% from a year ago, and exceeded expectations data released by the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden showed.

The results were well above the median of an Econoday survey of economists for a gain of 1.8% over the previous month.

Excluding large orders, the result was a 1.6% gain month-over-month in March. Compared to February 2020, the month before corona pandemic restrictions were put into place, orders are 9.1% higher, the office said.

Domestically, orders rose 4.9% in March from a month ago with orders from abroad up 1.6%.

Orders by sector:

  • Intermediate goods +2.8% M/m
  • Capital goods +2.5% M/m
  • Consumer goods +8.5% M/m

Orders for February were revised up, with month-on-month orders up 1.4% (1.2%) and 5.8% year-over-year (5.6%).

Monthly changes are price, seasonally and calendar adjusted and year-over-year comparisons are on a price and calendar adjusted basis.

The Federal Statistics Office will release industrial production figures for March tomorrow at 8:00 CET.
